Abstract
The present study utilizes the methods of archaeological survey, sedimentology, GIS mapping, petrography, and soil micromorphology to show that the Shang Dynasty settlement of Pan- longcheng is situated upon a landmass that made up primarily of rolling hillocks made of a network of red soil and built-up lake and riverine sediment. It was found that prior to the Shang period, the lower- ing of the lake and riverine water table cause the lake sediment to be exposed, providing necessary foun- dational material for the creation of the Panlongcheng settlement. It was also found that the Shang resi- dents of Panlongcheng conducted large amounts of terraforming in order to adapt ideally to suit settle- ment development. This analysis shows that there is an intimate relationship between the development of Panlongcheng as a settlement and the changes to the local geology.
